The Arts-In-Education residency program most fequently takes
place at a school. Artists are usually placed at a school site
for two weeks to teach ceramics, dance, drawing, mime or various
artistic pursuits. Some residencies are based elsewhere in coordination
with other arts programs. For instance, AIE artists might be
placed in a residency program at a public library to teach a
writing workshop. The AIE program is funded by the Oregon Arts
Commission, the NEA, and local dollars. It is administrated by
a part-time AIE Coordinator at the Center.
Artist Roster
An artist roster listing the artists and services AIE provides
is sent out to all schools in Linn and Benton counties each fall.
The roster is updated every two years. Each year new artists
are added to keep the mix as lively as possible. The application
deadline for the 2000-02 roster is April 1, 2000. Applications
are available at the Corvallis Arts Center. Professional artists
who enjoy teaching are encouraged to apply. Experience working
with children is helpful but not necessary.
Serving Linn
and Benton Counties
The Arts-In-Education residency program links professional artists
with students of all ages. From school children to senior citizenscan
take advantage of the AIE program. Schools, churches, at risk
youth
facilities, and senior centers are all excellent sites for AIE
residencies.
The AIE program is adaptable in its effort to serve as many
local citizens as possible. A church group that wants to create
a mural in their sanctuary or an at-risk youth organization that
wants to augment its educational program with painting lessons
are both opportunites for artist residencies. Schools most often
use the program as a supplement to their arts curriculum to give
students the opportunity to create
artwork on a one-on-one basis with a professional artist.
The Oregon Arts Commission, the NEA and local dollars fund
the Arts-In-Education program, which is part of a statewide AIE
network. A part-time AIE Coordinator is available at the Corvallis
Arts Center.
Services and Information
Many services are offered through the AIE program. AIE is not
only a residency program, it can also book assemblies, performances,
resource artists, and regional folk arts and artists. Through
the AIE statewide network arts education information is available
including programs offered by the NW Film Center and the Oregon
Folklife Program, which is
part of the Oregon Historical Society.
Of special interest is the Student Arts Tour program. A fund
has been established that will pay one half of the total bussing
costs for elementary schools to take an art-related field trip
in the Linn/Benton area. Trip planning and arts venue information
is available.
Artist-In-Residence Placement
Schools or groups interested in having an Artist-In-Residence
may choose from a roster of artists the artist that best fits
their needs. An on-site coordinator from the sponsoring organization
or school is chosen to liason between the AIE coordinator and
the group. The AIE coordinator and the on-site coordinator discuss
the details and develop a contract regarding, the who, what,
where, and when of the residency. The project and the number
of students who will be involved determine the length of the
residency.
