Empty Vessels
for the Fight Against Hunger
and Homelessness

The Corvallis Arts Center, June 8 through July 6, presents Empty Vessels, an exhibit of vessels made in various media such as metal, wood and ceramics. This exhibit addresses the important role of art in society. Art can serve as a tool to enhance awareness and even heal emotions. Art for art sake, the pure aesthetic appreciation of art is a valuable notion, but in today's society art can, and should on occasion, reach further. Net profits from the sales of the vessels will be donated to Community Outreach, Inc.

The Corvallis Arts Center partners with Community Outreach, Inc. (COI) in this exhibit to raise awareness of the many in our community without shelter, medical care and food.
Community Outreach has been meeting the needs of low-income, disenfranchised, and at-risk people in Linn and Benton counties since 1971. COI is the only agency in the region providing coordinated, comprehensive services, on site, to help people find solutions to achieve long term self sufficiency. COI provides medical care, operates a family with children shelter, a men's shelter and helps families find permanent solutions to their homelessness.

Community Outreach is presently engaged in a Capital Campaign to raise funds for a new facility. The new facility will expand the medical clinic, include a shelter for families, build a shelter for single women, an additional shelter for homeless men, an on-site classroom. In short it will be a facility designed to efficiently serve as a social service agency.
Empty Vessels is based on Empty Bowls, an initiative of ceramists (the Imagine/Render Group) to fight hunger. Groups serve a simple meal of bread & soup to paying customers, who keep their bowls as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. Proceeds from the event fund a food provider designated by the hosting group. Empty Bowls events are held in all fifty states and several other countries.

The Corvallis Arts Center's exhibit, Empty Vessels has broadened the spectrum from ceramic vessels into an array of media. The Center invited artists who work in a variety of media to participate in the exhibit. Metal work and basketry; ceramic and wood; glass and even fabric, a variety of shapes and forms, will be on display. A number of the vessels are functional, and can be used on a day to day basis, reminding you of its origin. Others will be purely decorative and remind you in a metaphorical way of its meaning.

The opening reception will be held, Wednesday, June 14, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. and will be celebrated in a festive manner; Jason Saunders, a ceramist himself will auction selected pieces off to people present. Another selection of pieces will be offered in a silent, blind auction, which means one can bid on the work, without knowing what the previous bids were. One need not be present the entire evening to win the highest bid. The majority of pieces are directly for sale during the evening of the reception and during the remainder of the exhibit. All purchases can be picked up at the end of the show.
