Art and medicine are intertwined in Steph Nelson's paintings.
Nelson worked in various medical situations including hospital
emergency rooms and sleep research centers. Nelson works in a
technique called "reverse-painting." The technique
dates back to the 3rd or 4th Century AD, and is still used in
folk art. Paint is applied to a transparent surface, which gives
a very luminous effect. Details are painted first, backgrounds
last. The work needs careful planning, with a finished composition
before the artist starts with the actual execution. Nelson uses
automotive paints on plexiglass.
"Prana" by Deb Ramsay
Deb Ramsay works in encaustic paints with eggshell inlay and
copper patina. Ramsay shows a recent series of Hand Mudras: a
precise way of holding the hands and fingers. East Indian sculptors
of spiritual figures use mudras to give identity to the deity
they are creating. Mudras tell a story in the dances of India
and Bali. Yoga practitioners use madras to alter the breath and
active energy pathways through the body. Mudras have been passed
down for hundreds of years and are still vital pieces in rituals
that offer comfort, solace, and healing to those who partake.
The artworks are painted with encaustic paints, pigment mixed
into purified beeswax. The word encaustic means "to burn
in" relating to the melting of the wax during the painting
process. It's an ancient medium used before oil paint was "invented."
Clay frames are embellished with encaustic paint, copper leaf,
found objects, and an eggshell inlay technique resembling mosaic.

(her tolerant father's unloaded Kodak Retina). Somewhere along
the way she added film. She has worked as a commercial photographer,
a custom printer, and a retouch artist. Torn always between science
and art, Denise did graduate work in both photography and wetland
and aquatic botany. Two years ago, dissatisfied with the ability
of both traditional black & white and color photographic
materials to capture the emotional experience of wetlands, Denise
began working with photographic dyes applied to archival processed
silver gelatin prints. It continues to be a work-in-progress.
To Ruth Leeper, the process of painting is the most important
aspect of art. She views it as continuous, joyfull struggle.
She works with bright, loosely painted oils with an emphasis
on light and shadow depicting landscapes, historic homes, places
and things that are meaningful to her.
Leetra Taylor shows "children's drawings translated into
dolls." Taylor had students make a self portrait, which
she used as a "pattern' to make a three dimensional doll.
Taylor is an experienced dollmaker, known for her Celebration
Dolls. She gives classes in doll making.
